How to be an Innkeeper- Classes in Providence Rhode Island

Historic_Jacob_Hill_InnEver wonder what it would be like to be an Innkeeper? Wake up each morning in an environment that others just come to visit. Meet interesting people from all walks of life each has an interesting story. Even a few celebrities that you would never get this close too, in another life.

So many of our guests are interested in “how we got into the Innkeeping business”. My husband and I had owned our Historic Jacob Hill Inn property since April 26, 1991.

This year we celebrate our 26th anniversary of purchasing our Inn. A few years ago we decided we should share our knowledge with those that want to ” live the dream”. We came up with three options:

The First one is a Group Workshop: the last two years we worked with different consultants in the industry and held a one day seminar at the Historic Jacob Hill Inn. Another perk for those attending the seminar is to stay at our award winning inn as part of the package. Both years they were a complete sell out so we are currently working on this years workshop please contact us if you are interested in this option.

The second option is more of a hands on approach “one on one” with the owner Innkeepers my husband Bill and myself.

Lastly our recommendation for a current guide book on Innkeeping. “Running a Bed and Breakfast for Dummies” written by Mary White founder of BnBfinder.com will give you all the basic information to start you thinking. It’s not for everyone but it has been good for us as we celebrated out first 23 years as Innkeepers.

More details can be found on our sister property Blog at Historic Jacob Hill Inn.

Finding a good Beer in Providence

mugsLagers, Ales, Stouts, and more. A beer is one of American’s favorite drinks. There is imported or domestic and bottled or draft. Always so many choices to a classic beverage. The question is how do we choose? And where do we get one?

Here in Rhode Island there are a little under a dozen breweries to choose from. The Fool Proof Brewing Company located in Pawtucket, RI is a unique brewery. They choose to package their beers in cans, being that they think it captures more of the flavor than a glass bottle. They offer tours and tastings for visitors which can be conveniently booked on their website at http://www.foolproofbrewing.com. The Fool Proof Brewery has five men and a dog running it, yes a dog. Their mascot is Lucy an adorable bulldog who provides inspiration to their beers. The Fool Proof Brewery is a local brewery who provides a unique view on their beers, go and check them out!

About a half hour outside of Providence located in Westport, MA is Buzzards Bay Brewing. This company is known for their ingredients in their beer and the purity their beer has. They focus on what goes into the beers like their natural spring water and the malts grown in America. BBB encourages guests to come visit their farm and try some of their beers. You can sip on your beer and sit in the sunlight on their farm. For more information go to http://buzzardsbrew.com/ Check out their site for the latest fun thing they have going on at the farm.

An all American name, a beer in which everyone knowns, Sam Adams. Located in Boston, MA the Sam Adams Company is as American as you get. This beer was not served in bars and restaurants until 1985, although the recipe for the beers was created in the 1870’s by the founder’s great great grandfather. Sam Adams offers tour to visitors, but they have to be 21 or older with valid identification. Check out Sam Adams at their website to book a tour! samueladams.com

For those that want to try a few brewery’s and not have to worry about driving,  you can just sit back and enjoy on Rhode Islands Beer Bus. A big favorite on Mancations more info on the Brew Bus .Remember we have a nice man cave at the Providence Luxury Hotel with a billiard table perfect for group getaways.
